One of the concerns some couples have about embryo adoption is the long-term effects it could have on their child, themselves, and their family as a whole as the child gets older, particularly into their teen years. Finally, a study presented at the American Society of Reproductive Medicine Conference looked at the psychological effects on teens, their parents, and the strength of the parent/child bond, comparing children conceived naturally and those who were conceived with donated genetic material.
And the results? There were no significant differences found between naturally-conceived children and those born through third party reproduction. While the study focused on those conceived through a donated egg or sperm, similar results have been observed in children born from donor embryos. In fact, some studies have found that children born from frozen embryos are actually more confident than many of their peers; a fact that could be attributed to typically older, more established parents. No matter the reasons, it seems that frozen embryos grow up to be just like their naturally-conceived peers.
Embryo adoption has been around for decades, giving researchers, agencies, and parents all a chance to see the long-term effects for themselves. Children born from frozen embryos are just as happy and healthy as their peers, and there have been no studies which have identified any negative long-term repercussions of this alternative family building method.
